Peterhead GSHP network
Project / Team
This social housing development in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire had 54 dwellings over a mix of flats and terraced houses. They wanted to look at changing from gas to ground source heat pump heating.
Services: Technical Survey, Thermal Modelling and Energy Performance Certificates
Client: Kensa Contracting
Owner: Grampian Housing
Onsite Technical Assessment
Starting with a measured onsite survey we could assess fabric, ventilation changes, thermal bridging and internal and external gains. The team were onsite mostly in evenings and at weekends to get access to all the households.
A full set of drawings and photographs was recorded for the design team to take the project forwards.
A heat loss model can be produced based on the design day conditions.
Heat Load Modelling
Each property had a ‘room by room’ heat loss calcualtion produced to EN12831 standards.
In a GSHP project this level of detail is important at the design stage as estimates from EPC data are not accurate enough to assess thermal loads.
Heat Pump Sizing
If time is taken at design phase then the actual heat pumps, number an length of boreholes can be calculated with a degree of accuracy. This in turn allows the capital cost to be determined with some degree of confidence.
We could also check the existing radiator and distribution systems and check how may may need to be upgraded/ cost for any improvements.
