Retrofit House Edinburgh

Project / Team

This private house in Edinburgh was looking to rerofit to the highest standards (passive house/enerPHit)  of fabric and incoporate renewables with solar PV and a heat pump.

Services: Energy Modelling, Solar and Heat Pump yield  modelling and Energy Performance Certificate.

Architect: Grigor Mitchell Architects

Owner: Private House

Technical Assessment

A detailed thermal model was constructed and used to explore a multitude of heating, ventilation and renewable options.

This aids the design team and client to assess each system to alternatives systematically.

It also allows the fabric options to be evaluated to give best value for money spent and to meet the strict passive house standards.

ASHP Modelling

The use of high quality windows and fabric insulation can achieve significant savings in energy use (up to 75% in a retrofit project like this).

The remaining heat demand was though to be best serviced from an air source heat pump.

Our detailed model allows correct selection of the final heat pump.

Solar PV Sizing

As the fabric first / passive house approach was taken the resulting energy demand is low and a significant amount can then be met by the use of solar  photovoltaic (PV) panels.

The lifetime CO2 reduction is low as grid electricity is decarbonising rapidly, however, as a cost reduction measure it made sense to incorporate in roof solar at this stage as new roof material was needed anyway.
